Quarterly tax basics

Who has to pay quarterly?

Generally anyone who expects to owe $1,000 or more when they file, which usually means the self-employed, 1099 contractors, landlords and people with large investment income.

What is the safe harbor?

You avoid an underpayment penalty if your withholding and quarterly payments cover the smaller of 90% of this year's tax or 100% of last year's tax. If last year's AGI was over $150,000, the prior-year figure is 110%.

How do I pay?

Through IRS Direct Pay, your IRS online account or EFTPS. Choose "estimated tax" and the correct tax year. Florida has no state income tax, so there's nothing to pay the state.

Uses 2026 IRS brackets, standard deductions, the 2026 Social Security wage base and a simplified QBI deduction. Estimates only, not tax advice.
